Project name: QEC4QEA – Quantum Excellence Centre for Quantum-Enhanced Applications

Our Vision: Turning innovative quantum computing science into real-world applications.
Project Acronym: QEC4QEA
Grant Agreement ID: 101194322 (EuroHPC JU)
CPVA Contract No.: 10-086-P-0001 (signed on March 10, 2026)
Duration: November 1, 2025 – October 31, 2029 (48 months)
Problem Statement and Objectives The potential applications of quantum computers are diverse, ranging from data security to materials science and drug development. Developing tools tailored to these applications requires centralized quantum infrastructure and close coordination between research and industry.
QEC4QEA addresses this by building a one-stop-shop for quantum-enhanced applications, offering:
- A hardware-agnostic application library;
- Standardized benchmarking tools;
- Curated access to high-performance computing (HPC) and quantum infrastructures across Europe;
- A dedicated training programme and help desk, supporting scientists and developers in building and integrating quantum solutions.
Vilnius University is one of 18 partners in this pan-European consortium, coordinated by Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (Germany), which operates JUPITER, Europe’s first exascale supercomputer, and JUNIQ, a unique hybrid quantum computing infrastructure. The VU team at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, led by Prof. Remigijus Paulavičius, focuses on two industrial use cases:
- OPT-A4 (Scheduling problems): Formulating and solving complex scheduling challenges, such as satellite mission planning, using quantum-ready methodologies.
- OPT-A5 (EV charging stations): Optimizing the strategic placement of electric vehicle charging infrastructure through Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) and Quantum Graph Neural Networks (QGNNs).
Beyond technical contributions, VU is well-positioned to support training and user-engagement (WP5), as well as dissemination and exploitation activities (WP6) through its established national and regional networks.
Funding and Budget QEC4QEA receives funding from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (JU) under Grant Agreement No 101194322 and all participating countries in equal parts. In Lithuania, the project is co-funded by the Central Project Management Agency (CPVA).
- Total Project Budget: € 9,451,556.25
- Total VU Budget: € 363,813.75
- EU Contribution (EuroHPC JU): € 181,906.88
