„Insights into Ion Channel Gating through Nonlinear Time Series Analysis“
Abstract: Ion channels are proteins located within the biological membranes of living cells. They facilitate the rapid and selective movement of ions, such as Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺, or Cl⁻, along their electrochemical gradients. These channels are essential for maintaining cellular ion homeostasis and mediating signal transduction.
The mechanisms of ion transmission across the cell membrane have been extensively investigated through theoretical, computational, and experimental studies aimed at elucidating ion channel function. In this presentation, I will show how patch-clamp time series can be analyzed using nonlinear techniques, including entropy-based information measures and mode decomposition methods. Specifically, we analyze data recorded from large-conductance potassium (BK) channels under various modulatory and voltage conditions within a nonlinear framework that combines spectral and information-theoretic approaches. Therefore, extending patch-clamp analysis with measures such as power spectrum evaluation, signal complexity metrics, and temporal pattern assessment provides deeper insight into the gating dynamics of ion channels.
